Expo Shanghai 2010 broke all records. 53 billion dollars were spent for the most spectacular and expensive world exposition so far. The largest exposition site ever covered 5.3 km² on the banks of the Huangpu river, and the event attracted 73 million visitors, the largest audience in the history of Universal Expositions.
It included over 240 pavilions and an Urban Best Practices area, a showcase for innovative and successful urban experiments. Its theme was “Better city, better life”, putting the accent on sustainable urban development.
The Chinese pavilion representing the traditional red-painted oriental crown, the 1 km Expo Axis or main boulevard, the World Expo Centre and the Expo Performance Centre all became permanent features on the riverbank landscape.
