MILAN ART BOX TOUR

Milan Art Box experience invites you to explore new conceptual containers that showcase contemporary collections and the arts. Together with an art and architecture historian, you will analyse the social and economic importance of galleries and cultural spaces for single neighbourhoods, and Milan as a whole.

Start with the 800 square meter Art Incubator (Incubatore per l’arte) designed by Stefano Boeri in the Porta Nuovadistrict. Although it is probably the most modest component in the renovation of Garibaldi-Isola area, Art Incubator plays a crucial role in its social, metropolitan and economic development.  Move on to the Steam Factory (Fabbrica del Vapore), conversion from a factory where trams were built into an art complex that embraces music, theatre, dance and cinema. Today the structure which is an example of late 19th century industrial archeology is known for being a hub for creativity and knowledge in Milan. Next is the Superstudio in the trendy Tortona neighbourhood – an event space and museum for temporary and permanent exhibits. The creative mind behind this project, Flavio Lucchini, developed area to be a place where passion for art and culture is shared among local and international designers and photographers.

Then onto the glossy Koolhaas / OMA revamp of a former distillery in southern Milan covering 205,000 ft2 opened in fall 2015 to house the Prada Foundation and Collection. OMA renovated seven buildings and added three new ones including a gallery, cinema and a tower that is still under construction. The building design preserves the industrial style, and combines old structure with modern techniques and materials. The special feature in the redesigning of Prada Foundation is the 24-karat gold leaf that has been added to the exterior of the complex.
