Those who know Milan know that you can’t get much more upmarket than Via della Spiga. The high street in the heart of the Milan’s most exclusive shopping district recently became Italy’s very first “Smart street”.
The pilot project, in anticipation of already finished Expo 2015, has the intention of making the City of Milan decidedly smarter through elements like a brand new LED lighting system and free ultrafast Wi-Fi. The energy saving lighting system will give the street a completely new look – and name – Spiga Smart Street. Other innovative services for both citizens and visitors include a multimedia touch screen dedicated to communication and travel information, sustainable mobility with stations for charging electric cars and bikes as well as SOS and video surveillance system for security.
The Spiga Smart Street project has been sponsored by the ‘Friends of Via della Spiga’ association, with the support of City of Milan and private companies including Samsung, Fastweb, Umpi, Blachere Illumination, Cariboni Group Lighting and Imq.
“We are proud to sponsor this project. This smart platform, if extended to the city, would provide savings of energy management and optimization of maintenance processes, helping to improve the quality of life of the Milanese”, explains Franco D’Alfonso, Alderman of the City of Milan to the Commerce and Tourism.
